If a deck can survive on the marsh, it can survive anywhere in Horry or Georgetown County. Out here we spec like boat people: stainless where it counts, and no faith at all in "exterior-grade" from a big-box shelf.
Marsh air is a different grade of salt
Homes along the inlet don't get occasional salt exposure — they live in it. The creek breeze carries brine onto every screw head, hanger, and rail connection, all day, every day, and ordinary galvanized coatings that last a decade in Carolina Forest can show red rust here in three or four years. That's not a lumber problem; it's a metallurgy problem. On marsh-facing builds we move to stainless fasteners and connectors as the default, isolate dissimilar metals so they don't eat each other, and choose railing systems whose brackets aren't the weak link.
What we check on inlet decks
- Every visible fastener head. Rust bloom on screw heads is the early warning — what's visible on top is happening faster to the hangers underneath.
- Rail post connections. Salt plus the constant push of the sea breeze loosens rail hardware sooner here than anywhere else we work.
- The house-side flashing. Storm-driven rain off the marsh tests ledger flashing sideways, a direction inland decks rarely see.
- Elevated post bases. A lot of inlet homes stand tall on pilings or grade beams — the connection where deck framing meets those supports gets salt and structure load, and deserves an inspection habit, especially after any named storm passes offshore.
Building new on the marsh
A new build in Murrells Inlet is where the composite conversation gets serious: out here the recoat cycle for wood shortens to its coastal minimum, and composite's no-maintenance case is at its strongest. Either way the frame and hardware carry the real engineering — and on the inlet, that's where we refuse to economize.
